Kenya, Tanzania and the ‘Kingdom of the Lion’

From the African savannah to the beaches of Zanzibar

PMmedia Adv.

A visit to Africa is a unique experience, incomparable and always unrepeatable. Perhaps it is the enchantment conjured up by the vastness of the savannahs, or the charm cast by the intense colours; perhaps the wonder caused by contact with nature, or the primal appeal of the sounds of the night and the scents of the earth. Perhaps the dream begins here: that of anyone who truly wants to know the soul of the African savannah. Although this first stop is in Kenya’s capital Nairobi, the first destination proper is the ‘Kingdom of the Lion’, or in other words the Masai Mara, in Kenya. The total area of this national reserve (1510 sqkm) is situated in the huge Rift Valley, which runs all the way down from the Mediterranean Sea to South Africa. The Masai Mara is everything savannah land is thought to be, with some marshland, but also with areas covered with pasture and acacia groves. No wonder the film The Lion King was inspired by this national reserve. Don’t be fooled into thinking that you might actually see Simba (which means lion in Swahili), but the plains of the Masai Mara are actually famous for their lions, and also for buffalo, elephants, leopards and rhinos. As well as for wildebeests, hyenas, gazelles, giraffes and zebras, among many other species. There are a few ways to come into contact with the wildlife, to go on safaris, and one of them is to watch them from above, in a hot-air balloon ride.
We then head to one of Africa’s other highlights, Lake Victoria, or Victoria Nyanza, between the territories of Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda, and the experience of watching a magnificent sunset on a private island is undoubtedly unforgettable. From there, we set off for the Serengeti National Park, in Tanzania, which is a natural extension of the Masai Mara. It is home to the largest animal migration of mammals in the world and is one of the wonders of the natural world. The Big Five of the savannah are present, as are other important species. The Serengeti, as well as Ngorongoro, one of the largest intact craters in the world and one of the most amazing places in Tanzania, are considered UNESCO Heritage Sites. The Ngorongoro Conservation Area is another rich wildlife habitat and it is a must to take the trip down into the 600-metre deep and 20-km diameter volcanic caldera to see the largest permanent concentration of wildlife in Africa.
Then we head to Arusha to catch a glimpse of it, because the next day a flight takes us to Zanzibar, an exotic Tanzanian island, the treasures of which, among many other gifts, include its vegetation, its beautiful, fine sandy beaches of fine sand, turquoise-coloured waters and Stone Town. Zanzibar is actually the name given to the set of two islands (Zanzibar and Pemba). Interestingly, the first European to visit the island was Vasco da Gama, in 1499. The Portuguese ended up establishing a trading post and a Catholic mission there, and ruled the territory for two centuries. But Zanzibar is truly rich in culture and architecture, featuring a blend of vestiges of many peoples. The islands are home to beautiful beaches, ideal for kicking back and chilling… Perhaps the best way to end a memorable trip: a dazzling combination of the sounds, sights and scents of African soil with scarlet sunsets.

22NOV – Masai Mara (Full Board)
We remain in the Masai Mara National Reserve, where, at any time of the year, you can see the animals considered to be the ‘Big Five’ in the savannah: the Lion, the Buffalo, the Elephant, the Leopard and the Rhino. Here you can also watch numerous species of birds.
The Mara River is the natural barrier where large herds of wildebeests and zebras cross between the Masai Mara Reserve and Serengeti National Park each year, offering a truly breathtaking spectacle. Our camp is in a privileged spot to follow the great migration underway...
You’ll be able to go on safari on foot through the main crossing points of the great migration on the banks of the Mara River. Accommodation at Olengoti Eco Safari Camps (East Africa Camps).

23NOV – Masai Mara / Lake Victoria (Full Board)
As an option, and early in the morning, you can go on a hot-air balloon safari.
On the way out of Masai Mara park, we will do another safari. Heading ever westward, we will reach today’s destination, Lake Victoria, also known as Victoria Nyanza or Ukerewe. A boat transfer will take us to our private island accommodation on Lake Victoria. Expected arrival at dusk, where you can enjoy a wonderful sunset. Accommodation at Lukuba Island Lodge.

24NOV – Lake Victoria / Serengeti (Full Board)
In the morning, we will have a 45-minute boat ride on the lake, to take a closer look at the activity of local fishermen. We then continue towards the Serengeti National Park, which is the natural extension of the Masai Mara Park. There are no borders between these countries within the parks, not for people and, of course, not for animals. It is estimated that 2.5 million animals travel between July and October in search of fresh pasture. These are the so-called migrations. Tonight you can relax before a wonderful dinner under the stars, all in the purest Out of Africa style. Accommodation at Pumzika Serengeti Safari Camp (East Africa Camps).

25NOV – Serengeti (Full Board)
Another day filled with safaris in what is one of the ‘sanctuaries’ of the ‘Big Five’ of the African savannah. Make the most of your day by taking photos, filming or simply watching. Possibility of some optional activities.
Accommodation at Pumzika Serengeti Safari Camp (East Africa Camps).

26NOV – Serengeti / Ngorongoro (Full Board)
Our safari today will once again be the very journey through the Serengeti National Park that takes us to another wildlife ‘cradle’, the Ngorongoro Conservation Area.
Visit to a Masai village on the way.
Our camp will provide spectacular views of the Ngorongoro Crater (we are the only camp that enjoys such a view) a true experience. Spending time and enjoying conversation and a glass of wine around the fire with our Masai friends, who keep the camp safe, will become an unforgettable memory.
Accommodation at Pakulala Ngorongoro Safari Camp (East Africa Camps)

27NOV – Ngorongoro / Arusha (Breakfast)
Early in the morning and in 4x4 vehicles, we will descend into the Ngorongoro Crater, a volcanic caldera more than 600 metres deep and more than 20 km in diameter, where you will find the largest permanent concentration of wildlife in all of Africa. In the crater of this huge volcano, extinct for thousands of years, thousands of animals find their sustenance due to the permanent existence of water, so there is no need for migration. Once we’ve enjoyed this fantastic experience, transfer to Arusha.
Accommodation at The Arusha Hotel (Four Points By Sheraton Arusha)

28NOV – Arusha / Zanzibar – Stone Town
Breakfast at the hotel. At a time to be arranged locally, and according to your flight schedule, transfer to Arusha Airport (JRO) and flight to Zanzibar. Arrival, assistance and transfer to the Zanzibar Serena Inn. Bed and breakfast. Stone Town (the only town on the island) is a fine reflection of its cultural heritage, where Arab, Indian, Persian and European influences mingled with local African traditions. Historic buildings with elaborate wooden carved doors line the narrow winding alleys in a vivid display of the town’s architectural wealth, in which the Portuguese presence in the 16th century also makes itself felt.
Rest of the day free to get to know this charming town.

29NOV – Zanzibar – Stone Town / Zanzibar - Beach
At a locally arranged time, transfer to the beach resort. Arrival at Baraza Zanzibar and accommodation in a villa, all-inclusive.
Zanzibar, also known as the Spice Island, is located in the Indian Ocean, 35 km off the coast of the Republic of Tanzania. Zanzibar is a perfect place to rest on its idyllic beaches of white sand and warm, crystal clear water.
Rest of the day free.
